My good friend John, who came up to Coventry to paint a sign on the door of our Gallery on Sunday, has bought himself some tackle so that when he visits we can also get a few hours on the bank. This weekend I decided that we would probably both fit into the swim at Bretford where I'd had such a good day last time out

Perfect Swim

After my recent efforts on the canal, I had to get out and do some real fishing, and so yesterday morning I took advantage of an early morning lift to Bretford

The day was freezing cold and I had to take Molly for a long walk to vent some of her exuberant energy. I wanted to fish but had to take Molly, and that always, always means trouble, especially if I stay in the one spot for too long

The Winter Wye

Hay is an interesting town if you are the booky type, but I'm not especially. However it has a number of other redeeming features that commend it to an angler staying at a hotel in town, especially if that hotel just happens to back onto the steep wooded cliff that tumbles down to the waters of the Wye.

Worms catch perch and chub, also roach and barbel, and, perch, chub, roach and barbel are the prime stock fish of the Bretford stretch of the Avon. According to my club Coventry AA book. Now, I'd seen a huge perch and plenty of chub, indeed had caught a few of the larger residents of the latter species, so it seemed logical that big roach also, up to two pounds at the very least, were feasible
